What is a flashfiction NCIS challenge?

The flashfiction NCIS challenges run every two weeks, the current challenge can be found here and looked like this last night. You may have to scroll down past submissions to find the actual challenge.

Stories submitted to the challenges look like this:

See the little information box like this:

Clicking on either userinfo links will tell you almost everything you need to know about the rules:

The archive of challenge responses in alphabetical order may be found
here.

Still keen? Let's submit a story.

Where to post

First thing: login. I know it's silly to say but I forget all the time. Just insert your user name into Username box, insert your pasword in the Password box and press Log in.

This box now changes slightly and you can see the link you need to post your story to the forum - Post to this community

clicking on Post to this community takes you to the page where you can actually submit a story (I always use the rich text tab, if you want to use the other, you're on your own):

Inserting your story

If you remember the rules, the first thing to get right is the title format. For ease of archiving the format is title, by author

like this: [image]

Then the header information is inserted in the main text box. The instructions say 'standard header' but I couldn't find out what that means so I composed one out of everyone elses. These are all the components I could find but you don't have to submit all of them and you don't have to use this order:

Title:
Author:
Challenge:
Rating:
Genre:
Characters:
Pairings:
Warnings:
Spoilers:
Disclaimer:
Words:
Summary
:

The ratings are the same as in Adam's ratings thread which I shamelessly steal yet again:

G - Intended for general audience 5 years and older. Content should be free of any coarse language, violence, and adult themes.
PG - Suitable for more mature childen, 9 years and older, with minor action violence without serious injury. May contain mild coarse language. Should not contain any adult themes.
PG-13 - Suitable for teens, 13 years and older, with some violence, minor coarse language, and minor suggestive adult themes.
R - Not suitable for children or teens below the age of 16 with possible strong but non-explicit adult themes, references to violence, and strong coarse language.
NC-17 - Content is only suitable for mature adults. May contain explicit language and adult themes.

Unlike fanfiction.net, there are no limitations on how explicit your story can be.

Mine looks like:

Now it's time to inset your story. I just cut and paste from word into the text box.

There will be a short interval while I actually write a story...feel free to talk amongst yourselves. I might have to change the word count in a moment too.

Then we cut and paste out award winning, heavily betaed masterpiece into the text box under the header.

DON'T POST YET: YOU STILL HAVE TO INSERT AN LJ CUT

LJ-cut - the kindest cut of all

If you noticed back on the opening page, the stories were only shown down to the end of the summary and then there is a link to the story itself. This is achieved with an lj-cut.

Here is the lj description:

So we need to highlight our story text withour cursor (i.e. leave the header alone):

and hit the lj_cut button on the menu, 6th from the right. Pass your cursor over the button and it should say 'lj-cut'.

If it refuses to co-operate complaining about blocked popups, you may have to temporarily allow popups and scripted windows. Otherwise it will crash like mine just did and you will have to type everything in again....grrr.

Anyhow, you hit the lj-cut button and you get a popup that invites you do put in some words for the link. You can use the default or add something else:

when you succeed, your lj-cut text will sit in a grey box:

It is now time to submit.

Submiting your story

Stoires are submitted with the Post to ncis_flashfic button at the bottom of the page:

You will then be informed of your success:

At this point, I tend to go back to the original
link and check the appearance to the outside world - note you will have to update the page to see your story.

If you click on the 'read me' link, or the word 'link' at the bottom left hand corner of your story box, it should take you to your story.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Note - reviews or comments are left by pressing the 'comment' link on the bottom right hand corner of your story box.

Editing you submitted story

Astoundingly, some of us make mistakes after submitting a story. If this happens to you then you can edit.

See the strange symbols at the top of your story? [image]

Pass your cursor over the pencil and see it say 'edit entry', hit that and you return to the same window you used to edit the original story except you 'save' rather than 'submit' when you have finished.
